Glasgow School of Art Diploma show 2006. Returning from Glasgow, and the opening night of the Glasgow School of Art diploma show. According to the GSA website, the London Times and the Independent class it as one of "the" shows to see in the UK this summer. The show is open from 17th June to 24th June. It is also simply great to get "lost" wandering around the Mackintosh building: stumbling upon those small ceramic tiles which are encrusted into the stairwells, or walking along the greenhouse corridor on the south elevation. Personal highlights were the environmental design of Lindsay Sekulowicz - delicate paper sculptures and a series of fine detailed landscape drawings that share the universe of Fred Deux's large paperworks; Erin McGrath's installation in the fine art section - a moleskin notebook filled with citations, observations, sketches, and then dissected and gridded to the studio wall (swiss+anti-swiss design ??); Freja Frosch and Jonathan Boyd in Jewellery and Silversmithing. Frosch is apparently the only student to work intensively with carving, and although the work is mainly floral, two pieces combine a powerful and sugestive antler "tongue" which roots a clearly defined "head-piece". Boyd's work which is different both in style and feeling, engages with narrative in a direct and ambitious manner. One of the pieces, a polyptich of five elements entitled Remembrance - four corner "stones" surrounding a central flower motif - can presumably be worn in any combination, leaving the wearer to add (or subtract) meaning from the ensemble. Pretty much everything in the graphic design department was really strong (along with their beautifully produced catalogue, which has found a home in the cheesemonkey design library).
